Long Cottage is a delightful stone-built cottage and typical of the Galloway area. Originally a 19th century grain store it now forms part of the secluded Balcary Mews. Long Cottage is in a beautiful peaceful area only a matter of 50 yards or so from the stunning Balcary Bay where those with young kids can enjoy a day on the beach. Long Cottage is warm and comfortable inside and with a lovely wood burning stove in the spacious living room it’s the perfect place to relax in front of the fire after a day on the beach. On a fine evening there is an enclosed garden just across the way from where you can sit and enjoy the sun setting over the Bay.
There is so much to do from your doorstep at Long Cottage and walkers and cyclists will be in heaven. One of the most dramatic walks in the whole region starts from Balcary Bay following the cliffs and coastal path to Rascarrel Bay with beautiful sea views and from where, on a lucky day, you might spot dolphins, porpoises or seals. Just across the Bay is Hestan Island, uninhabited today. Home to a lighthouse since 1850 and until it was replaced by an automated light, a lighthouse keeper lived on the island in a cottage which still stands. For a tiny Island it offers no shortage of interest including caves believed to have been used by smugglers at various times, and the remains of copper mines dug in the 1840s and when the tide is out you can walk across to it as today it is only home to grazing sheep and seabird colonies. Not only an ideal base for walkers and cyclists but Long Cottage is perfect for families and those just wanting to get away from it all, yet you are never far from some of the best attractions in the area and of course on your doorstep also is the Balcary Bay Hotel where you can enjoy a lovely meal and a drink.
