Neighbourhood Stoke Newington is in the borough of Hackney and is relatively close to Shoreditch and other cool places in East London. Church Street has become the main area for independent shops, bars, various eateries and a farmers' market every Sunday. Just a short walk from Church Street is London’s only all-organic farmer’s market in front of St Paul’s Church on the High Street. Held every Saturday, it’s the perfect place to get to know the locals and stock up on delicious organic fare. Church Street actually boasts another park, too, this time on the western end of the Street. Clissold Park is much more groomed than Abney Park and features a lake and a deer enclosure. The locals are so proud of Stoke Newington, they’ve even set up their own magazine, ‘Stereo Stokey’. They have restaurant and pub reviews and loads of info on upcoming events. Church Street has a brilliant selection of Turkish restaurants, due to the large influx of Turkish settlers in the 1970s. They are largely ocakbasi restaurants, known for their grilled food. We particularly love Cirrek Brothers, and there are some nice kebab places, too. Along with the Turkish eateries, Stoke Newington also offers vegetarian dishes from Kerela at Rasa, Spanish tapas at El Olivo, Asian fusion at Itto, Italian fine dining at Il Bacio, Mexican favourites at Mercado, and many more. Make sure you arrive with an appetite Transit Like many places in Hackney, Stoke Newington has no tube (although the Seven Sister's stop on the Victoria Line isn't too far away), but plenty of regular buses going in all directions including night buses. There's the 73 which goes from Victoria all the way to Seven Sisters around the clock, so is often full of party people at night time. From the High Street you can get pretty much any bus down to Dalston or Shoreditch, including the 149 which goes all the way to London Bridge, or the 243 and 76 which go to Waterloo. There's also an overland rail line to Liverpool Street, Cheshunt, Enfield, Richmond, Clapham or Stratford from Stoke Newington station. The nearest tube stations are either Manor House (Piccadilly Line), Finsbury Park (Victoria and Piccadilly Line) or Angel (Northern Line) but these are at least a good 20 minute bus ride away. Gatwick Airport is super-easy to reach: hop on the 106 bus to Finsbury Park Interchange and then catch a direct train to the airport. Alternatively, you can go to London Bridge via bus 149 and catch a train from there. Uber is a great alternative to taxis - and a much cheaper one!
