During the 17th century, Carperby was an important centre for Quakerism and the largest building today is the classically styled Friends Meeting House which overlooks the market cross and village green. Dating back to 1378, much of the castle survived the orders to destroy famous Yorkshire castles, issued by Parliament in The Civil War. It is also located perfectly for cycling; the famous opening stages of the 2014 Tour de France passed just over a mile away. For the adventurous, mountain biking routes run from the door, over Preston moor and into wild Swaledale.
