Positive: If, like us, you use Google Maps to navigate, access to the hotel is via A847. A mural with the hotel's logo welcomes you at the entrance. Our first impression was that it's a proper mansion, felt like a film location. A closer look revealed a few cracks and stains here and there, but the overall experience was good. It's an old house, dating back to the 1600s, with an interesting history. Alas, we had to look it up, as we didn't find any information displayed for the guests. The room we had was on the second floor, access to which was through a spiral staircase. There's no lift, and the hallway doors were quite narrow; it was a bit tricky to get through with all the luggage. The room was true to the pictures on the website: large, clean, and comfortable. Our favourite features were a hard mattress on the bed and two sinks in the bathroom. We did not dare to open the window (midges!), so during the warm nights we used the fan provided (a heater was provided too). We had a Nespresso coffee maker with a nice selection of teas and coffee to enjoy. We also had four bottles of water - two still and two sparkling - replenished daily. Towels were changed quickly when they were not hung on the bathroom wall. The staff is helpful, yet scarce and unobtrusive. We enjoyed one evening at the hotel bar, sitting in the ancient room, looking out the window and watching grazing rabbits. The selection of whisky was more than impressive! The umbrellas provided to the guests proved useful one evening, when we walked to the restaurant in the village in pouring rain.

Negative: Our full Scottish breakfast was disappointing. It looked reheated and quite small. Although we could use all the food displayed in the form of a continental breakfast buffet, we hoped to taste local specialities. The sausage was dried, and the haggis was soggy.
